Door Repair
Doors that stick in summer, gap in winter, or will not close at all
A door that drags, will not latch or has dropped in its frame is almost always a hardware or alignment problem rather than a door problem. We fix the cause instead of shaving the symptom off the edge of the slab.

A door is a system, and one part of it has failed
Before a door slab genuinely wears out, several other things fail first. Hinge screws lose their grip in the jamb. The frame shifts. The strike drifts out of line. The threshold wears down. The weatherstrip compresses flat and stops sealing.
Every one of those is repairable, usually in an hour or two, and for a small fraction of a new door plus installation.
Colorado's dry air adds a specific complaint we hear constantly: doors that bind in the warmer months and then show a visible gap in the depths of winter. That is wood giving up moisture and taking it back, and the fix is adjustment rather than replacement.
Planing a sticking door treats the symptom. Finding out why it started sticking is the repair.

What we repair on a door
The door, the frame around it and the hardware that moves it.
Sticking and binding doors
Diagnosed, adjusted, shimmed and rehung so the door closes cleanly without removing material unnecessarily.
Hinges and sagging slabs
Screws pulled loose from the jamb, worn hinges and doors that have dropped enough to catch on the floor or the strike.
Latch and strike alignment
When a door shifts, the latch stops meeting the strike. Realignment fixes what most people assume is a broken lock.
Weatherstripping and sweeps
Fresh seals and door bottoms, which in a Colorado winter is one of the highest-value small repairs there is.
Thresholds and sills
Worn and misaligned thresholds reset so the door seals without dragging, and snow stays outside.
Closet and bypass doors
Off-track doors, broken guides and pivots, and panels that jam or will not stay closed.
What Colorado does to doors
Dry air, moving ground and hard winters account for nearly all of it.
Very low humidity
Colorado air is dry enough to pull moisture out of wood doors and jambs year after year. Slabs shrink, gaps open in winter, and hinge screws lose their bite in dried-out jamb wood.
Expansive clay and frost heave
Front Range clay swells and shrinks with moisture, and frost heave lifts ground through winter. Both rack door openings slowly out of square, which is why a door that hung perfectly for a decade suddenly catches in one corner.
Snow, ice and thresholds
Meltwater running under a door and refreezing at the threshold wrecks sweeps and sills, and a dragging door scraping over a raised threshold makes it worse every time it opens.

Door repair questions
My door sticks in summer and has a gap in winter.
That is wood responding to Colorado's humidity swing. We adjust hinges and strike and ease the edges rather than planing material off, because a door planed in August leaves a bigger gap in January.
My door suddenly catches at the top corner.
Classic sign of a dropped slab or a frame that has moved. Hinge repair and realignment usually solves it without touching the door.
Cold air comes in under my front door.
Either the sweep has worn flat or the threshold has dropped. Both are quick, inexpensive repairs and both make an immediate difference in winter.
Can you fix a door that will not lock?
Yes, and it is one of our most common calls. Usually the latch no longer meets the strike, which is alignment rather than a new lock.
How long does a door repair take?
Most hardware and alignment jobs run one to three hours. Anything needing a part ordered takes a short return visit.
Other repairs we handle
Doors and windows are all we do, so whatever has failed, it is probably on this list.
